The demise of Sears Canada was named the country's top business story of 2017, with many locations closing including Airdrie's.

The Airdrie Sears store will officially close it's doors as of 7:00 tonight (December 18th).

However, store owner Karim Kassam says he and his staff aren't going anywhere.

"Everything is going to stay the same, only the name is going to change from Sears to Airdrie Appliance."

Kassam, who's owned the Sears store for 11 years say it's a sad day for the business but he's excited to remain in Airdrie under an independent name.

"That's what we want to do and support the Airdrie community who have been phenomenal with us. They've supported us throughout so we want to continue being in Airdrie."

Sears stores across Canada continue to close after the retail chain filed for creditor protection in June, shutting down the franchise after 64 years in Canada.

The new Airdrie Appliance and Mattress store will open first thing tomorrow morning (December 19th).
