57 year old Douglas Garland who was convicted February 16th on three counts of first degree murder in connection with the 2014 kidnapping and killings of Alvin and Kathy Liknes and their five year old grandson Nathan O'Brien is appealing his conviction.

Garland's lawyer filed a notice of appeal yesterday seeking a retrial.

Some of the grounds for the appeal are that the trial judge erred when he ruled that a search of Garland's Airdrie area property was lawful and that the disturbing nature of the evidence in the case was overemphasized which prejudiced the defence.

Galand was sentenced to serve three consecutive life sentences, meaning he will spend 75 years in prison with no chance of parole.  His lawyer also plans to seek a review of that sentence.  Since his conviction, Garland has been assaulted twice in prison.

Garland violently kidnapped the Liknes' and the little boy from Alvin and Kathy's Calgary home on June 30th, 2014 and took them to his farm where he murdered them.
