Four Albertans have been appointed to the province's Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) with one of them being an area local.

Sandi Roberts, a former councillor in the Town of Carstairs, has been named a part-time member of the NRCB after serving as an acting member since 2017 and being on a total of eight tribunals during that time.

Roberts is a professional engineer who holds a Bachelor of Science in agricultural engineering.  From 2002 to 2010 she was an approval officer with the NRCB.  She then served on council for the Town of Carstairs for four years, from 2013 to 2017.

Roberts was chair or a member on numerous sub-committees, including the Carstairs Policy and Governance Committee, Municipal Planning Commission, and the Municipal Development Committee.

She is currently Project Manager for the Olds College Teaching and Learning Centre of Innovation.

Roberts was selected through an executive search by the Public Service Commission in July 2020. She has the knowledge and expertise that's required to transition from her former role as an acting board member to that of part-time member.

Peter Woloshyn has been reappointed Chair of the NRCB.  He and Roberts are joined by Indra Lynn Maharai and Earl Graham, who have been appointed acting members.  All appointments are for three-year terms.

The NRCB oversees the review of major development proposals in forestry, non-energy mining, and recreational and water management projects where an environmental impact assessment is required by Alberta Environment and Parks. The board is also responsible for the review, approval, monitoring and enforcement of animal feeding operations in the province.

“The Natural Resources Conservation Board makes decisions on projects that protect our shared environment and keep Albertans working," says Alberta Minister of Environment and Parks Jason Nixon.  " I have every confidence in these new and returning board members, and would like to warmly congratulate them on their appointment.”
