The Airdrie Fire Department was called out to a fuel spill on Monday.

Officials say it happened on a roadway in front of a residence on Summerwood Road SE. When fire crews arrived they determined an unknown amount of diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway

Due to the melting snow and ice, the fuel was carried down the road and into the storm sewer system. Firefighters deployed absorbent pads and booms to contain contaminates from entering adjacent Nose Creek.

Staff from Public Works, Water Services and Municipal Enforcement attended to assist with the initial investigation and mediation efforts. A Rapid Response HazMat team was also dispatched to the scene to assist AFD with the removal and disposal of all contaminated materials.

Deputy fire chief Garth Rabel says it’s area residents who alerted emergency crews to the spill.

“It’s really important to look out for your community if you do see a potential hazard and inform emergency services quickly. If we turn our backs it can go from a small problem to a large problem,” he explained. “So we just need to be diligent and look out for each other and the community.”

This incident remains under investigation. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours while work to clean up the spill was completed.
