The Airdrie City Council met yesterday to discuss important information and approve certain propositions.

The city council approved the proposition of Airdrie becoming the first Blue Zone Community in Canada. The city will be putting funding towards helping citizens live longer, healthier lives and to improve on Canada’s already world famous health care.

Mayor Peter Brown says the proposition was “exciting”.

“We’re investing in our community members.”

The council unanimously approved the funding of attempting to become Canada’s first Blue Zone Community.

The Airdrie Domestic Violence Coalition presented their Action Plan and Next Steps for approval. Airdrie’s domestic violence rates are 3 percent higher than Alberta’s average and there were 819 domestic violence cases in 2017. The action plan wants to see this average go down with active awareness, interventions, risk assessment, and long-term goals.

The presentation received unanimous approval.

Airdrie youth were granted cheaper monthly passes when the Discounted Youth Transit Products presentation sought approval by the city council.

The council approved the reduction of monthly passes to $25 per month for Airdrie youths ages 6-18 as well as the removal of summer month user fees.

Urban beekeeping guidelines were approved by the council. Aspiring beekeepers must receive neighbor consent and mandatory beekeeping training along with other restrictions after some problems with a neighborhood beehive last year.

The Airdrie City Council was presented with the residential waste audits results from August this year. The results were not exactly what the city wanted to see with contamination being present in blue and green bins. Additional actions such as changes to collection times or smaller collection may be required in the future to meet goals.
