The City of Airdrie is continuously looking at ways to ensure the safety of all Airdronians in the event of a city wide emergency.

The Emergency Management Committee has been created to oversee all major events such as tornadoes, train derailments, ice storms, fires, hostile situations, and more.

Lorne Stevens, Director of Community Infrastructure said the committee is made up of a cross section of operations and administrative staff.

To ensure the committee is current and up to date on all emergency training, Stevens said that committee meets quarterly and runs training exercises annually.

"We typically run practice scenarios on at least an annual basis. We've had mock scenarios with City Hall being on lock down, we've also participated in provincial exercises on major ice storms, and we've done mock exercises on train derailments."

In 2010, Stevens said the emergency plan was put into action when a train derailed just North of Airdrie.

In the event of a large scale emergency, Stevens said there is local, Provincial and Federal plans in place.
