Airdrie residents with dreams of living in the city's first lakefront community are disappointed now that Melcor Developments has put the brakes on the development of Lanark Lake.

Council recently voted to downsize the Lanark Neighbourhood Structure Plan after the developer decided not to proceed with a 32-hectare freshwater lake for the area, citing concerns over the state of the Alberta economy.

Councillor Candice Kolson for one is very disappointed in their decision but also says there's not much they could do about it.  "I probably stated very clearly in the meeting, I'm very disappointed.  This was a piece of a bylaw that we can't really argue with.  It was just an overarching picture that, the reason we're kicking back the community and making it smaller now is because there will be no lake."

Kolson says Melcor told them there was not going to be a lake for the area and, at the end of the day, the decision had to be made and council had to adjust their planning around that.

Kolson says she would still love to have a lakefront community built in the city, someday.  "Of course, I would say, to have a lake community would be great, to have estate lots around the lake community would be great, but at this point, it's just a wait and see game and, with the ups and downs of the Alberta economy it will continue to be a wait and see game."
