This week, members of the RCMP from all over Alberta arrived in Airdrie to play in a unique hockey tournament.

"It's called the Red Coats for Kids hockey tournament. What it is is an opportunity for us to get together, have a meet and greet with the members, and also an opportunity to raise money for a great charity," said Cst. Chris Gilroy, a recruiter with the Airdrie RCMP and one of the organizers of this year's tournament.

The annual event began on Wednesday (January 24) and finished this morning, pitting members of the RCMP's K Division against one another on the ice. Participating RCMP members were drafted to different teams, giving them an opportunity to reconnect with old colleagues or meet new friends. Gilroy explained that other events, like a "smoker" on Wednesday and a banquet on Thursday, also encourage camaraderie.

Through a combination of business sponsorship, donations and a 50/50 draw, money is raised for a charity in the community hosting the tournament. This year, Community Links will benefit from the annual event. Gilroy said Community Links was selected because of the important work they do to support Airdrie families and individuals.

"What happened was the board got together and we all had our different ideas of who we should choose. Obviously, it was a difficult decision, but we got together, had a vote and chose Community Links."

Brenda Hume, Executive Director for Community Links, was on hand for the puck drop at the final game of the tournament. She said the organization values their association with the RCMP.

"Our partnership with the RCMP is extremely important. We work together on a continual basis. The proceeds will go to our domestic violence support, and we're very grateful for all the sponsorship, the volunteers, the organizers."

Gilroy did not know the total raised through the tournament but said the final tally should be known in the coming days.
