This one will likely take some time to get over.

Canada has been eliminated from the World Junior Hockey Championship and will not medal for the first time in history on home ice.

The Canadians fell to Finland 2 - 1 in overtime last night (January 2) in Vancouver.  It's the second time the Finns have knocked Canada out of the tournament in the past four years, both times in the quarterfinals.

Canada rode strong netminding from Michael DiPietro and a goal early in the second period by Ian Mitchell to a 1 - 0 lead with under a minute to play in regulation time.  That's when Finland scored a lucky goal with 46.4 seconds left to play to tie it up.  The Finns then got the win 5:30 into the extra frame to shock the 18,000 plus fans in Vancouver and millions more across the country.

Team Canada will finish sixth at the tournament.

In another upset last night, Switzerland shocked Sweden 2 - 0.  The USA and Russia also won their quarterfinal games.
