Airdronians flocked the train tracks by Nose Creek Park on Friday evening to catch a glimpse of the festive Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) holiday train.

Hundreds of Airdronians gathered to look at the once-a-year opportunity to see the light displays on the train carts and take in the short 30-minute concert from Canadian band Anyway Gang.

Because the Holiday Train shows are free to attend, CPKC asked attendees to bring a cash or non-perishable food donation if they were able to do so.

This was the last stop of the day for the train, it also stopped in Innisfail, Olds and Didsbury today. Tomorrow it will be in Calgary for the day.

“The Holiday Train program is close to the hearts of our CPKC family. Our railroaders take great joy in joining communities across our network as they come together in the giving spirit of the holidays," said CPKC President and CEO Keith Creel. “We are proud to support local food banks as we fight food insecurity by collecting food and raising money and awareness. I am grateful to all the railroaders and community members who have supported the Holiday Train over the past quarter century and made it such a success.”

Last year, the holiday train re-started the much beloved North American tour after several years of being on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the Holiday Train program launched in 1999, it's raised $22.4 million and collected 5.15 million pounds of food.

The holiday train is one of several more festive events that have or will be in Airdrie this December.

The following week, on Friday, December 15, The Festival of Lights will be hosting Emergency Services Night, in which local first responders will be at Nose Creek Park.

As per the New Year, The City of Airdrie is planning to go ahead with its annual evening fireworks show on December 31. According to the city, a 15-minute firework display will be going ahead at 6:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park. This is a free, family event.
