RCMP say a crash north of Airdrie Wednesday night was likely the result of a severe thunderstorm.

Olds RCMP, fire and EMS were called to a single-vehicle collision on Highway 2A just north of Didsbury at Township road 320.

Police found an SUV had rolled from the highway into a ditch off highway of 2A during a severe thunderstorm around 8:45 P.M. on September 18th. The SUV sheared off a power pole as a result of the collision.

A female driver was found to be unconscious and trapped in the vehicle. She was extracted and taken to the hospital in Didsbury where she was then airlifted to another hospital by STARS Air Ambulance with serious injuries. Two other passengers were transported to Didsbury Hospital via ground ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

The collision had resulted in a temporary closure of Highway 2A for around three hours. The cause of the collision remains under investigation, but RCMP believe severe weather to be a contributing factor.
