Jake Vold of Airdrie is off to a great start as he tries to climb the ladder to a World Bareback Championship at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

The three time Canadian champion who finished second in the world last year marked a big 87.5 points on a Kesler Rodeo horse named Oakridge to win the first performance of the NFR last night (December 7).

The win nets Vold $26,230 and moves him from 9th place all the way up to 3rd in the standings.

The night wasn't as lucrative for the other area cowboy in Las Vegas, Cochrane's Tanner Milan.

Milan, who went into the NFR holding down 8th place in the steer wrestling standings, only managed a run of 6.6 seconds and finished out of the money.

The second performance goes tonight at 6:45 pm at the Thomas and Mack Center.
