Between May 1 and May 17, Alberta RCMP responded to 17 deaths due to motorist collisions.

"7 of those were under the age of 20," said Sgt. Jack Poitras. "Although some of these are still under investigation at this time, the cause may have not been determined but we are noticing a trend throughout the Province that distracted driving is playing a large role in accidents as well as alcohol."

The RCMP have laid charges in four of the deaths and investigations are ongoing for the other 13.

Distracted driving includes using your cell phone, using a GPS, eating, playing with the radio, fixing your make-up, or being distracted by a passenger or pet.

"If you're driving please refrain from answering phone calls and texting and doing other things."

Recently 2 motorcyclists were killed by drivers who failed to notice them. Poitras said it is important for drivers to be aware of all vehicles including motorcycles and bicycles that are within the drivers perimeter.

Due to the increased risk of vehicle fatalities over the May long weekend, RCMP will be ramping up enforcement on highways and will be setting up check-stops across the Province.
