The Red Deer Vipers scored 1:35 into the overtime frame last night to pull off a 5 - 4 win over the Airdrie Thunder in Heritage Junior Hockey League play.

Red Deer's Declan Johnston scored his third goal of the night to give the Vipers an important win over the Thunder.  The overtime victory pulls Red Deer five points ahead of Airdrie in the race for first in the league's Northern Division.

The fact the game even went into overtime is remarkable.  Airdrie trailed 4 - 2 heading into the third period before Clay Murray and Matt Thomson scored power-play goals 20 seconds apart midway through the third to tie things up before Red Deer got the OT winner.

Jacob MacDonald in the first period and Rylan Plante-Crough in the second accounted for the rest of the Airdrie scoring.  The Thunder dominated the game in shots on goal by outshooting Red Deer 46 - 29.

The Mountainview Colts were at home in Didsbury and won by the identical score of 5 - 4 over the Stettler Lighting.  5 - 4 seemed to be the score of the weekend as the Lightning beat the Thunder on Friday night by that same margin.
