The Red Deer Vipers struck at the heels of the Airdrie Thunder as the Northern Division rivals battled in Airdrie last night (January 26th).

Both teams exchanged goals in the first period with Kristopher Leclair, Clay Murray and Matt Thomson scoring for the Thunder. The Vipers though had the advantage, leading the game 4-3 heading into the second period.

The next forty minutes mirrored the first period as both teams scored often with Clay Murray notching his second goal of the game on a penalty shot.

However, Red Deer had more goals in that period and finished the second with a 7-4 lead.

The third period was a more defensive battle as neither the Thunder or the Vipers scored, leaving the final score at 7-4 for Red Deer.

With that loss, the Thunder fall seven points back of the Vipers who lead the Northern Division and the Heritage Junior Hockey League with 25 wins for 51 points.

Airdrie is back in action on February 2nd when they take on the Three Hills Thrashers.
