Mike Reist is the first Airdronian to take home the Mr. Airdrie Memorial Award in Honour of Keith Wilkinson.

The plaque was presented to Reist at today's Airdrie City Council meeting. For the award, there was both a nomination and voting period.

After the sudden passing of one of Airdrie's most beloved souls last year, an anonymous donor has created the "Mr. Airdrie Memorial Award in Honour of Keith Wilkinson" to continue his legacy.

Wilkinson helped out the community in many different ways, some examples include him being a part of 100 Airdrie Men Who Give a Damn, helping fundraise money for Genesis Place, playing Santa and visiting some of the young residents and being a part of the Lions Club for a long time.

The three nominees for the award were:

  • Ryan Middleton - One of the largest Airdrie advocates when it comes to EMS.
  • Wendy Contant - long-time volunteer helping out multiple organizations like the Airdrie Food Bank and Airdrie Health Foundation.
  • Mike Reist - long-time volunteer, organizer of multiple events and founder of "Adopt-a-Grad Foundation".

"I have no words," stated Mike. "I'm so thankful to receive this award but both Wendy and Ryan deserve the award just as much as I do."

Lori Reist, who was on the committee for the award is very thankful for the public and their participation in the award.

"I want to acknowledge the fact that all three deserve recognition for all of their contributions to our city."

Mike and Lori both hope this award is just a stepping stone for more Airdronians to get out in the community and help out when and where they can.

The plaque is anticipated to be displayed in Airdrie City Hall.
