Its only May and already we have had grass fires as well as a large forest fire near Cochrane.

According to Matt Bell, Wildfire information officer for Alberta Wildfire, there are multiple fires going on throughout the province currently.

"As of 10 am this morning there are 24 wildfires in the forested areas of Alberta, six are out of control, four are being held and 11 are under control and three have been turned over to the responsible parties."

Unfortunately, we haven't hit the period of greening yet. With the recent hot and dry conditions comes an elevated danger rating for wildfires throughout the province, most danger ratings are on high or extreme.

Bell said if you're out camping make sure you are using caution.

"If you're having a campfire before you leave soak the fire, give it an hour then see if its cool to the touch and soak it again,"

If you are going out camping check the Alberta fire bans website to make sure there are no fire bans in your camping areas.

If a wildfire is spotted it's crucial to call 310-FIRE. If current weather conditions continue we may see an abnormally high amount of wildfires this season.
