A previously issued thunderstorm warning for Airdrie and the surrounding areas has ended.

Earlier this evening, just before 7 p.m., Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Airdrie and the surrounding area.

"Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to toonie size hail and heavy rain. This thunderstorm is located 20 kilometres southeast of Dogpound and is moving 20 kilometres/hour to the southeast," the warning previously stated.

Residents were reminded that severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

"Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!"

Earlier this evening, a thunderstorm watch was issued for Airdrie and Crossfield; the watch is still in effect.
