If you've ever walked in Bayside and noticed something eerie in one of the canals, you're not alone.

Pictures recently surfaced on Facebook showing what appears to be a crocodile floating in the body of water just off of Bayside Drive.

Don't worry though, it's not real. It's actually nothing more than a remote control boat with a crocodile head on top of it.

The boat belongs to Bayside residents Stephen and Maureen Orton who bought the novelty a couple of years ago.

"I saw it when I was online one day and thought, 'that's kind of cool, we can have some fun with that.' I just ordered it online and it came through. I originally wanted to have a big concrete alligator coming out of the canal, onto my property but my wife vetoed that and allowed me to do the crocodile head instead."

The photo, which was recently posted on a Bayside neighbourhood page, turned many heads and brought some laughs as well.

Orton said he's surprised the croc has garnered such a response online as it's merely just something he does to bring some fun to the area.

"It's more for people coming down, walking down the canal just to enjoy the canal and have a little bit of a laugh and have some fun. Enjoy the things the city has to offer." "And scare the kids," added his wife Maureen who said despite rules against swimming in the canal, some do anyway.

As the crocodile is battery powered, it's not able to go out every day as it needs to charge but Orton said he takes it out once in a while and see how people react.

"It's kind of neat seeing the expressions on faces. Some people, when they are walking across, they're not sure, they start pointing wondering 'is that real'? Then I'll hide it under some bushes in the canal, then it comes out from under the bushes."
