After months of negotiating, deliberating, and bidding, the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) has decided the Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) will be heading to it's new host city: Saskatoon.

Starting in 2017, the CFR will be spending two years in Saskatchewan at the Sasktel Centre, which seats approximately 14,000 people.

"The arena is very much on the same level as Edmonton, other than they don't have the third level of seating, the real high row of seats. It's virtually the same design," said Pascal Del Guercio, a member of the negotiating committee with the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association and Chairman of the Strathmore Rodeo.

While the CPRA spent several months trying to keep Canada's biggest rodeo in Edmonton at Northlands, in the end it became clear that the CFR needed a new host city.

"We had several cities show interest in hosting this highly successful event. However, it was Saskatoon that rose to the top during our search for a new host. From the beginning, Saskatoon had a strong appreciation and understanding of the economic value that the Canadian Finals Rodeo would bring to their city," said Del Guercio.

Although the large event will be leaving the province, according to Del Guercio, the CPRA is confident that their fan demographic will not suffer; in fact, it'll get bigger.

"We feel that the majority of the six pack holders that are going to Edmonton will be following us. We also know that by moving to Saskatoon, we will be gaining a lot more of the Saskatchewan rodeo fans."

With Saskatoon being the youngest city in Canada, and hosting one of Canada's largest universities, having the rodeo in the city will allow the CFR to gain an entirely new fanbase, which will only add to the existing demographic.

The CFR will remain in Saskatoon from 2017 until 2019.

Meanwhile, Edmonton will be hosting it's final CFR event this upcoming fall and Del Guercio expects that Northlands will have an extra special show put on for it's final year in Alberta.

The event has been in Edmonton for the past 43 years.

This year's Canadian Finals Rodeo will be taking place November 9-13.
