The Rocky View Roller Derby Association (RVRDA) was founded in 2012 by a group of local ladies looking to bring the sport of roller derby to Airdrie and area.

Since then, the league has expanded to two teams, The Rebbelles of Rocky View, and The Bruise Battalion.

"It's like an alter ego that you have, like you put on your skates and you feel stronger and its such a fun sport," says RVRDA member Marlaine Diggins, "It's not like basketball or volleyball, you're constantly moving and its fast."

Practice takes place at multiple venues throughout the year, but they call Pete Knight Arena in Crossfield their "home turf".

You can catch their practice scrimmages all summer long at the Plainsmen Arena in Airdrie, and starting in July they will be playing at the Airdrie Farmer's Market Wednesdays at 6pm.

The organization started their apprenticeship with WFTDA in 2015, and look forward to becoming a fully sanctioned member team this summer.

If you don't really fit the description of a "roller girl", don't worry. Various men's leagues exist in Calgary, and the city is even hosting this year's Mens Roller Derby World Cup.
