Some residents from Rocky View County proved to be strong contenders in various events for Calgary Stampede 2016.

In the Heavy Horse Pull, Randy Dodge, from Airdrie, and his team of horses, Bubba and Jake - both weighing over 2,000 lbs - pulled a spectacular 12,000 lbs in round 9 in a distance of 34" - or 2 ft.

The Heavy Horse Pull has three weight divisions with horses in teams of two pulling a sleigh with different weights on it, increasing in heaviness with each round.

Dodge competed in all three divisions, winning first place in the lightweight division and second in the middle weight division.

Meanwhile, youth were given the opportunity to compete for scholarships in the International Youth Livestock Supreme Championships, which partnered up the Calgary Stampede with Olds College with the support of Alberta 4-H and the Alberta Junior Beef Breed Association.

Cassidy Wise, of Airdrie, took home the Championship in the Sheep class, while Tyler McMurry from Rocky View placed as top senior in the Herdsman competition.

In total, $70,000 worth of scholarships were awarded.
