The cause of a mid-morning gas leak in the community of Bayside has been attributed to construction equipment operating in the area, according to police. ATCO gas did attend along with emergency crews, turning the gas off.

According to the city, the Airdrie Fire Department responded to the gas leak at 10:56 a.m. at 1534 Bayside Avenue SW after receiving a report that a natural gas line had been struck.

"RCMP and Bylaw officers assisted to evacuate 8 families (20 residents) from an adjacent multi-unit condominium complex. RCMP also cordoned off the immediate area to vehicle and pedestrian traffic," a press release from the city stated.

As a precaution fire crews deployed large diameter hose lines to protect exposures, however, after approximately 45 minutes the scene was secured and the ‘all clear’ was given for residents to return to their homes.

No injuries were reported.
