If you're looking to beat the heat this week with some water activities on rivers or lakes, RCMP are reminding you to be safe.

RCMP Corporal R.M. Bumbry says many people will be taking advantage of the hot days to go boating, tubing, or canoeing.

"Although these are all fun activities, they can be dangerous if you don't take the proper precautions. We want you to get out there and enjoy the summer, but in doing so, make sure safety is your number one priority," he says.

According to RCMP, 57 people have drowned in Alberta since 2016, with 67 per cent of those taking place on a lake or river.

Alberta RCMP recommends the following tips to be safe on the water this summer:

  • Always make sure everyone on board, even experienced swimmers, are wearing lifejackets.
  • Always bring emergency supplies like extra food, clothes, and a cell phone.
  • Always check the weather forecast before going on the water. Changing weather conditions can be extremely dangerous while on the water.
  • Always know the area you will be operating in and share your itinerary with someone, so that if there is an emergency you can be found quickly.
  • Never operate a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

"Mixing drugs or alcohol with water activities makes one bad cocktail," says Bumbry. "These substances will impair your judgement and motor functions, endangering your ability to operate water craft or swim to safety."

In 2017, RCMP say drinking and boating accounted for approximately 49 per cent of boating related fatalities across Canada.
