The Airdrie Irish Football team were on the road again last weekend, hoping to capture their first win of the 2016 season.

Despite a strong effort from some of the Irish offensive stars, the Edmonton Raiders got the last laugh, winning 30-17.

Irish President Matt Squires says the team overall played a hard fought match.

"It was a pretty close game all the way up until basically the middle of the third quarter. The heat got to the guys a little bit and there's a few mental mistakes that we can learn from and grow from there."

Some members of the Green and Gold stood out in the game including Defensive Lineman Jonathan Grossberndt and Quarterback Morgan Hides who threw his first touchdown as a member of the Irish.

The pinnacle moment of Saturday's game however was the debut of the new Irish uniforms.

"We were wearing all green this weekend," says Squires, "the new dark forest green jerseys are definitely something that we hoped to have last year and unfortunately the colours didn't match up the way I wanted to."

The Irish will look to put the past behind them as they prepare to march onto the field at Genesis Place this Saturday June 11 for their first home game against the Fort McMurray Monarchs.

For Squires and the gang, being home is always something to celebrate.

"We love being back home, it's great. Airdrie supports us quite well. We love seeing the fans for our games, for our guys, to play in front of their families is very important for us.

Game time is set for 5pm, and children with Airdrie Minor Football's Flag program can receive 2 for 1 admission just by wearing their jersey.
