The first day of deliberations at City Council centred among many things, including Yankee Valley Boulevard.

There is a proposal of a possible six-lane road in the future, plus design and construction for a 4th Firehall.

When it came to policing matters, there is a proposal of hiring two new police officers. Airdrie RCMP would also like to add two members: one Corporal for general duty resources and one Constable for the Domestic Violence Unit.

There's also a proposal of adding private rooms within the Airdrie RCMP detachment office which would allow victims of sensitive crimes, such as sexual assault, to be able to report in a more comfortable setting.

“We would like to implement operational improvements to deal with patrons who require compassionate or confidential information transfer,” said Mark Locking, Director of Community Safety.

Director of Community Infrastructure for the City of Airdrie, Lorne Stevens, proposed that Yankee Valley Boulevard be turned into a six-lane road. The six lanes would go from Reynold's Gate to the QE II Highway.

“Having this increased transportation capacity between the QE II and Eighth Street may in fact give us additional staging, flexibility options, and cost savings when it comes to Yankee Valley Boulevard.”

Stevens went on to say the construction for the Yankee Vally would take about 3 years with significant detours.

Another presentation was brought forward to discuss the Capital Budget of community growth in protective services. Locking brought forward a proposal to start the design for the 4th Firehall in Airdrie. They hope to see construction start in 2024 and into 2025, shortly after the RCMP renovations are done in 2023.

City Council still has two days planned to talk about other topics in the budget.
