Calgary police believe that a Western Star Conventional dump truck that was travelling on the ramp from northbound Deerfoot Trail to eastbound Stoney Trail N.E. on Thursday evening may have lost control while trying to negotiate a curve.

"The dump truck rolled over and came to rest on the embankment on the south side of the roadway," police stated. "Speed is being investigated as a factor in the collision. At this time, alcohol and drugs are not considered to be factors."

The driver of the truck, a 24-year-old man, was declared deceased at the scene. The 32-year-old male passenger was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

As a result of the collision, the off-ramp from Deerfoot Trail Northeast onto Eastbound Stoney Trail was closed for several hours on Thursday evening. The ramp has since re-opened.

Police are continuing to investigate and are asking that anyone who may have information or dashcam footage, contact the police.
