A 51-year-old woman has been identified as the sole fatality of a collision east of Airdrie on Tuesday evening.

Airdrie RCMP were called to the multi-vehicle collision just before 11 p.m. on Highway 9 East of Range Road 252.

"Upon arrival, officers observed that a passenger car had a head-on collision with a semi-tractor-trailer. The driver of the car, a 39-year-old male resident of Red Deer, was taken to hospital by EMS with serious life-threatening injuries. The passenger in the car, a 51-year-old female resident of Red Deer, was deceased."

Mounties said that although the investigation is still ongoing, they believe that the passenger car was driving Eastbound in the westbound lane when the oncoming semi struck it.

"Fog was heavy at the time of the collision and may have been a factor."

A fog advisory is continuing for Airdrie and the surrounding areas as of Wednesday evening.
