Banff National Parks officials are alerting those who intend to visit the area for the upcoming May long weekend, that there will be restrictions on the consumption of certain products.

According to its website, '... The possession and consumption of cannabis and cannabis products during summer long weekends is prohibited by order of the Superintendents.' The restrictions will be in effect during summer long weekends beginning this long weekend and last till September 2. 

There is also a restriction on alcohol.

"The possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages is hereby prohibited during summer long weekends by order of the Superintendents. Policies are in effect from 7 a.m. on the first day until 11 a.m. on the last day."

The prohibition is in effect for the following areas:

  • Tunnel Mountain Village I
  • Tunnel Mountain Village II
  • Tunnel Mountain Trailer Court
  • Two Jack Main
  • Two Jack Lakeside
  •  Johnston Canyon
  •  Castle Mountain
  •  Protection Mountain
  •  Lake Louise Trailer
  •  Lake Louise Tent
  •  Lake Louise Overflow
  •  Rampart Creek
  •  Silverhorn
  • Waterfowl Lakes and Mosquito Creek

The long weekends impacted by the prohibition include:

  • Victoria Day long weekend: Friday, May 17 to Monday, May 20, 2024
  • Canada Day long weekend: Friday, June 28 to Monday, July 1, 2024
  • Heritage Day/BC Day long weekend: Friday, August 2 to Monday, August 5, 2024
  • Labour Day long weekend: Friday, August 30 to Monday, September 2, 2024

"Violation of this prohibition may result in immediate cancellation of your camping permit, eviction from the campground, or charges under the Canada National Parks Act; maximum penalty $25 000. Camping fees will not be refunded," Parks officials added.
