Rocky View Schools had to be creative this year with its Food For Thought program.

The initiative partners with local organizations to promote healthy eating and provide food to students.

Despite restrictions and closures because of COVID-19, the program was still able to provide funds and food to those who needed it most.

The Airdrie, Cochrane and Chestermere Food Banks received $5,000 each at the beginning of the pandemic and the program helped provide a new commercial refrigerator for the Airdrie facility.

"We recognize healthy eating is an important component of daily learning," said Community Partner Program Coordinator, Nikki Demyen. "In a normal year, Food For Thought provides nutritious breakfasts in a secure environment. This enables students to concentrate and learn effectively throughout the day."

About $2,000 was also given to stock the Cochrane Community Food Shed, which was built by RVS students in the Building Futures program. Funds were also given to provide mini-fridges at RVS Community Learning Centres and coupons for free eggs were provided to families in need.

"All families have been impacted by COVID-19 in a variety of ways, some of which can impact children’s learning," said Superintendent of Schools, Greg Luterbach. "By repurposing these funds to help partners in our school communities, we are ensuring local resources remain available to those in need."

RVS also plans to donate another $5,000 to local food banks to support their needs for the summer.
