Just 25 minutes after midnight on January 1, 2024, baby girl Marianthi was born at the Calgary Foothills Medical Centre.

Parents Chris and Marina Qiro welcomed their bundle of joy, weighing six pounds and five ounces, after a very brief and easy labour. All are healthy and happy.

“We were at a New Year’s Eve party when my wife started feeling pain around 9 p.m.,” Chris said. “We went to the hospital, all dressed up, and watched the fireworks at midnight from our room. A few minutes later our daughter was born – it was the best gift ever!”

About a dozen friends and family showed up for a champagne toast outside the hospital this morning to celebrate Marianthi’s arrival.

But it would be baby girl Isley Noelle Falk, who was born at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton and came into the world at exactly midnight. Baby girl Isley came into the world and 2024, weighing 10 pounds.

"We weren't expecting January 1 as I was induced on December 29. It's crazy she hung on for so long. We were hoping for 123123, and we were surprised that she was born right at the stroke of midnight. Either way it's a special day," says new mother Laura Falk.

And a few hours later, shortly after 3 a.m. on New Year's Day, little Bailee, the newest addition for parents Victoria Dorie and Scott Beardy, was born at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. Bailee was welcomed into 2024, weighing seven pounds and nine ounces. Bailee and Victoria are both doing well.

“We weren’t sure if she would be a New Year baby or not when I went into labour,” said mom Victoria. “There were others in labour around the same time so it was a bit of a surprise to be told we had the first one of the new year here.”

Bailee is the fifth child of Victoria and Scott, who has been welcomed by her older siblings, who look forward to teaching their little sister as she grows.
