As we approach 2024, the trend of mild temperatures persists into January.

Throughout this festive season, warm weather has been a constant companion. Christmas recorded a high of 3.7 degrees, while Boxing Day reached a peak of 10.8 degrees.

The onset of the long weekend might bring slightly cooler temperatures but we anticipate a gradual climb toward that mark by New Year's Day.

"Into Saturday, it is a little bit of a cool down as another system kind of from the northwest moves through. It will cool down to around the zero mark. Then into Sunday and Monday, We're looking at a little bit more of a warm-up again," stated Alysa Pederson, the Warning Preparedness Meteorologist for Alberta with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Saturday's expected daytime high is zero, Sunday is six degrees and Monday is two degrees.

So if you are planning to head out for New Year's Eve festivities while the temperatures are still balmy for this time of year, the city of Airdrie will be hosting its annual tradition of a firework display on New Year’s Eve.

The Normal daytime high for this time of year is -6 degrees, and we aren't expecting any big snowfalls yet according to Pederson.

"There doesn't seem to be any snow for the next week. There is a little bit of an indication of a cooldown coming near the end of the first week of January."

As of right now, forecasted temperatures for Wednesday and Thursday next week, as people head back to work are around -8 degrees.

Last year on New Year's Day, the temperature reached 2.4 degrees in Airdrie.
