Last week, it was announced Airdrie will be getting a new female hockey team.

On November 2, Hockey Alberta announced the addition of a new U13 AA division within the Alberta Female Hockey League (AFHL), and officially opened an application process for Minor Hockey Associations (MHAs) to apply to host those teams.

It was announced by Hockey Alberta’s Elite Female Hockey Committee Airdrie will be one of 16 hosts for a U13AA franchise.

The other hosts include:

  • Bonnyville
  • Calgary (three teams)
  • Camrose
  • Edmonton (two teams)
  • Grande Prairie
  • Leduc
  • Lethbridge
  • Lloydminster
  • Okotoks
  • Red Deer
  • Sherwood Park
  • St. Albert

All these teams will be ready to go for the 2023-24 season.

To establish programs and league operations for the forthcoming season, the Elite Female Hockey Committee is collaborating with all Host MHAs. The AFHL will also continue to examine a potential expansion for the 2024–25 season while reviewing the organization and alignment of U18 AAA and U18 AA.
