With Green shirt day coming this weekend (April 7th), organ donation is top of mind. Green Shirt day was proclaimed by Mayor Peter Brown April 1st, 2019, to honor Logan Boulet, who was lost a year ago this Saturday in the Humboldt Bronco's bus crash. He was an organ donor. With those organs, 6 other lives were saved. In the month after over 100, 000 Canadians signed their donor cards, but there are still many who haven't and haven't talked with their families about their wishes. Nova Scotia is looking to change that in their province.

Nova Scotia is set to become 1st in North America with presumed consent for organ donation.

Under the new bill, people will be able to opt out of donating their organs, but the onus will be on them to do so once the bill is proclaimed.

The bill would not apply to people younger than 19 or those who do not have the ability to consent for themselves. Other Countries have already adopted the system, it's a trend that started to gain traction about 15 years ago.

The bill will not be proclaimed right away. Government officials would want to have front line workers spend 12-18 months educating the public about the change and work on getting health-care workers the support they need to enhance the program.

Even with the change, people should continue making their wishes known to loved ones, so there can be no question about intentions.
