What started as a grass fire northeast of Airdrie has left one man injured with burns on his leg.

The April 22 fire was located at a farm near the intersection of Range Road 273 and Township Road 322 near Torrington.

"When we were just a few miles from the scene, we noticed that the smoke changed colour to thick black smoke, which is usually indicative that it's gotten into something else like a structure," stated Didsbury Fire Chief Curtis Mousseau.

A fire from a burn barrel spread to a field due to windy and dry conditions which later moved on to a nearby quonset.

"The entire quonset and everything inside which included a combine and a truck ended up being a total loss."

The man who sustained injuries was transported to hospital after suffering the burns. He was trying to put out the fire once it started spreading from the burn barrel.

Didsbury, Olds, and Torrington (Kneehill County) fire services were on the scene. The fire was taken care of as of last night.

As of today, Mountain View County has issued a fire restriction due to the weather. all controlled burn permits are cancelled with no more being issued until the restriction is lifted.
