Southern Alberta started seeding before the rest of the province, which means crops are beginning to emerge.

However, along with crops come a few pests that farmers need to watch out for.

Crop Specialist, Mark Cutts with the Ag Info Center says to watch for  flea beetles on your canola.

"You'll start to see some feeding damage on the leaves," Cutts explains. "If you're looking at the leaf and your starting to see little sections of the leaf that look like they have been chewed upon, that's a sign that you are seeing some activity by the flea beetles."

Cutts says if the canola seed has a seed treatment containing an insecticide, the flea beetles will be controlled when they feed on the plant. However if you don't have a seed treatment, he says you can go in with an insecticide and control them that way.

"You're probably always going to see some flea beetles so it's a good idea to check and see if they are feeding," he says. "However even if you are seeing feeding damage and the canola is growing very rapidly, they can outgrow the damage from that canola, so you need to assess how well that canola plant is growing when you are deciding whether or not to spray and insecticide."
