As of April 1st, the Alberta Government will no longer be mailing out registration and licence renewal reminders.

The government is looking to save taxpayers $3 million a year by offering an electronic reminder and getting rid of paper and stamps.

"During these tough economic times, it's particularly important for government to find smart ways to save taxpayers' money," said Danielle Larivee, Acting Minister of Service Alberta in a press release. "Moving from printed to electronic notices will save Alberta taxpayers more than $3 million a year while providing more modern and convenient reminder options."

To assist Albertans with disabilities, the government will continue to send out reminders in the mail. For seniors over the age of 70, there is a one year grace period with reminders continuing to be mailed out until April 1st, 2017.

The Airdrie Registry office will be setting up a link on their website for existing customers to sign up for email reminders.

Alberta has also worked in partnership with AMA to create reminders in your mobile phone or computer's calendar to alert you when your vehicle registration, driver's licence, or identification card is about to expire.

To sign up for one of the free electronic reminders follow any one of the links:

Motorists are responsible for ensuring that all licences and registrations are up to date, failure to do so could result in a hefty fine.

A driver's licence is valid for one to five years, depending on the class, and expires on your birthday.

Registrations expire on an assigned month based on a persons surname. The expiry date chart can be found here.
