Police investigators confronted Hunter Van Mackelberg with several inconsistencies after he was questioned about his whereabouts the night Kalix Langenau was killed.

CCTV footage captured Mackelberg's car on Valentine's Day night, contradicting his alibi. Previously, Mackelberg had told police that on the night of Valentine's Day, he had left his car in Airdrie when he went out to celebrate in a downtown Calgary bar. A neighbour's security camera recorded Mackelberg's car leaving his residence, minutes after Madeline Kot left in her car.

"Your vehicle and Madeline's vehicle are mobile that night around a period of time, which is concerning," police told Mackelberg. "That is your truck, and that is her car, minutes apart, passing by this area at a time of night in the general area where some sort of incident occurred."

Mackelberg admitted to the police that he did leave his house that night to go looking for Madeline Kot. He told police he was afraid of admitting he left the house due to curfew restrictions.

"She left, I asked what was up," he said. "So we have our spots that we go to when something's wrong."

Previously, Mackelberg had told also police that he had not been in the area where Langenau's body was found in four months, even though camera footage recorded on December 2nd, 4th, and 5th in 2019 showed Mackelberg's truck in the area that the homicide occurred.

"I may have been just four-wheeling out," Mackelberg responded.

When police asked if Mackelberrg knew of any communication between Kot and Langenau the night of Langenau's death, Mackelberg said he didn't know.

"I can't tell you. That's a question for her," Mackelberg said. "I'm not nosey."

Telephone records show that Langenau called Kot. During her testimony, Kot told the court that she had left to meet Kalix Langenau. The prosecution theorizes that Mackelberg followed Kot that night and killed Langenau.

During the interviews, Mackelberg said several times that he didn't want to answer any more questions on the advice of his lawyer.

"He's going to beat my ass because of the things I have said already," he said.

Mackelberg continued to deny knowing Kalix Langenau and continued to ask the police what had been found in his house and car during the search warrants being executed.

"I don't know the kid, I don't know how many times I have to say that," Mackelberg said. "I don't know how he likes his toast."

The trial is scheduled to continue Thursday.
