4-H groups from all over Alberta will be down at the Stampede grounds this weekend for the 19th annual 4-H rodeo.

Competitions include barrel racing, thread the needle, pole bending, goat un-tying, cow riding, steer daubing, and goat tying.

Kids of all age groups will be participating and this year, the Calgary Stampede 4-H Rodeo committee is adding in something new.

"We have a group of folks that put on the Cowboy Up challenge at the Calgary Stampede, they're coming down to the Agrium Western Event Centre to put on a jeopardy obstacle challenge," said Laura Frank, past chair of the Calgary Stampede 4-H Rodeo committee.

The 4-H rodeo allows kids to explore the world of rodeo, if they haven't already, and gives them an opportunity to meet kids from other places.

This year, they're also going to be working with a group called Giddy Up Cowboy, which is a special needs rodeo.

"4-H participants are able to be cowboy mentors to these special needs children. So it's a fun opportunity for them to volunteer with special needs kids that want to participate in rodeos, and it's a wonderful way for them to meet each other," said Frank.

The 4-H rodeo starts up on Friday, August 19, and runs until Sunday, August 21, at the Agrium Western Event Centre.
