With the current water restriction in place, it's important to follow the rules to make sure we don't run out of water.

Thankfully most Airdronians have followed the regulations that are in place and have cut back on using water indoors as the water main break in Calgary is being repaired. With that being said, some people are forgetful or are not following the rules that are in place for outdoor watering. Multiple Airdrie residents have taken to social media to complain about their neighbours not following the restrictions.

Under the current level four water restrictions in Airdrie, residents are not allowed to:

  • Water lawns, gardens, trees, and shrubs by any method other than rainwater.
  • Wash down any outdoor surfaces, including exterior building surfaces, windows, sidewalks, driveways, or walkways of any sort unless your business requires them to for health and safety reasons.

  • Wash cars on driveways or streets.

  • Fill outdoor decorative features, fountains, pools, or hot tubs.

  • Use potable water for construction purposes such as grading, compaction, or dust control.

When municipal enforcement does get a call to their complaint line (403.948.8888) they send an officer to talk with those who might not be following the restrictions that are in place.

Brad Tomlinson, Team Leader of Municipal Enforcement for the City of Airdrie explained over the week they have received a number of calls from residents complaining about their neighbours not following the rules.

"We are educating residents, we're working with them to stop the continuation of any offences. Residents have been fantastic in listening to us."

Tomlinson mentioned it's important that if you do see somebody who is breaking the rules, you contact municipal enforcement so they can handle it.

"We just explain that because of the restrictions, this is what's not allowed and we work with the residents to stop it from continuing."

Luckily, when municipal enforcement is called, they have not had to go back to a resident's home more than once. If it ever does come down to the point where penalties need to be handed out, fines could reach up to $3,000.

"I was to reiterate the importance of phoning any complaints in so we can make sure that we're continuing to do our part and make sure that we can achieve the best results with this water restriction."

On Thursday it was announced that arenas across the city were re-opening.

There are no boil water advisories in effect within the City of Airdrie and water remains safe to drink. A fire ban remains in effect for Airdrie and the City of Calgary.
