Alberta Parks officials have issued a bear warning after hikers encountered a black bear on a popular hiking trail in Kananaskis Country. The Troll Falls hiking trail is under a bear warning until further notice.

Areas that are impacted by the bear warning include the Evan-Thomas Provincial Recreation Area, Troll Falls Trailhead Day Use, as well as the Troll Falls Trail. 

Parks officials are reminding hikers that to avoid a bear, one should: 

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups. 

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs. 

  • Keep your pet on a leash. 

  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible and know how to use bear spray. 

All bear sightings should also be reported to officials at 403-591-7755. 

Other animal warnings in the area include: 

  • A bear warning for the Bow River Campground, in Bow Valley Provincial Park, about 5 kilometres east of Canmore. The warning has been put into place due to a black bear has been observed in the area. 

  • A bear warning for the Bow Valley Campground, Whitefish Day Use Area & nearby trails, in Bow Valley Provincial Park, about 30 kilometres east of Canmore. The warning has been put into place due to a black bear in the area feeding on berries. 

  • A bear warning for the Lac des Arcs Campground, in Bow Valley Provincial Park, 14 kilometres from Canmore. The warning has been put into place due to black bears in the area feeding on dogwood and other natural vegetation.
