The annual day to support your local community is nearly here once again.

Giving Tuesday is a global movement dedicated to donating to local non-profit organizations, whether it be monetary or through volunteer hours. A stark contrast to Black Friday and Cyber Monday which are two days known for their spending and shopping.

Giving Tuesday always takes place directly following American Thanksgiving which means this year it’s on December 1st.

Laurie Jacob Toews, Community Engagement Services Manager of Community Links Airdrie, reminds everyone that giving is a two-way street.

“Everyone has been impacted by COVID between having to cancel events or not having normal fundraising opportunities. If people could support local that would be helpful because all of our partners in the community, not just Community Links, are the ones who are helping out and doing our very best to keep the community functioning and supporting those residents who are in need right now.”

Supporting local is the top priority right now for many Airdronians who want to see small business owners land on their feet coming out of the pandemic. Toews goes on to say that the local businesses and the local non-profit organizations often work together to create a unique relationship.

“We have to remember that local businesses are the ones who support the local non-profits. Those are the people who hire within our community. They’re the ones you see sponsoring a lot of fundraising events. It’s the bigger picture thinking.”

Donating to a local non-profit goes even further this year because Community Links has a few sponsors on board to match donations. Fortis Alberta will match up to $2,500, Airdrie Autobody will match up to $500, and Davis Chevrolet will match up to $2,020.

Laurie Jacob Teows wants to remind the community that support is still out there, no matter how you’re struggling.

“There are many social services in Airdrie who are here to help you. Even though our fundraising is limited, we’re still here meeting the needs of the community. If you’re struggling please reach out.”
