A local Special Olympics athlete has passed away.

Marianne Lorenz participated in bowling and swimming with Special Olympics Airdrie.

Sandra Foreman, who was her bowling coach, stated she was not much of a talker but she enjoyed going to different dances and competing in her sports.

"She was an active participant when she was with us. She loved to compete and do well."

Sandra told DiscoverAirdrie that Lorenz was dedicated to the team and enjoyed the camaraderie.

One of her former bowling teammates, Katrina Foreman, recalled a special interaction she had with Lorenz.

"She was a great bowler. One of my birthdays, she asked me how old I was turning and wished me a happy birthday."

Lorenz also worked at Dairy Queen for 25 years.

A memorial dance and celebration of Lorenz's life is taking place this weekend, Saturday, September 9, at 6 p.m. at the Woodside Seniors Club in Airdrie.

Any former members of Airdrie Special Olympics who might have known her or current members are invited by the family. Donations to the Airdrie Special Olympics can be made at this event.
