The man accused in a deadly shooting in the Canals neighborhood made his first court appearance today.

Michael Antony Roebuck, 59, is charged with first-degree murder in relation to the September 7th incident.

A large police presence responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 5 p.m. that Saturday.

Daniel MacDonald, 57, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after emergency crews arrived.

Roebuck was arrested soon after.

He appeared via CCTV in Airdrie Provincial Court Thursday morning, only speaking to say "Yes sir" when the judge asked if he could see and hear the proceedings.

Roebuck's counsel Susan Karpa told the court she needed time to obtain disclosure for the case and discuss matters with the Crown Prosecutor Joe Mercier.

She asked that the case be adjourned to October 17. Roebuck's appearance was excused for that date. He has been ordered detained on the single charge he is facing.

Several rows of the courtroom were filled with supporters of the victim. When the case was quickly adjourned some were heard saying "That's it?" and "When does he plead?"

The judge explained that while these are indeed trying matters and understands people are upset, there is a process.
