Crews were left cleaning up a fuel spill in a parking lot on Main Street Tuesday.

Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel says crews were called shortly after 11:30 a.m.

The fire department responded to the area of the CIBC, Roxy Theatre, and Staples where part of the parking lot was covered with an oily sheen mixed with recent rain water.

Firefighters initially used absorbent pads and booms to contain the spill.

The Public Works Water Services team was also brought on board to deal with the incident.

"A lot of the residual hydrocarbon and water did go into the storm sewer system and we want to ensure that that didn't make its way into our natural waterways. So we've been working with them to isolate the spill and now we're working at removing and mitigating the incident," Rabel said from the scene Tuesday afternoon.

Plugs were installed in the storm sewer pipes to protect against further contamination. A Rapid Response Hazmat team responded to the scene to responsibly remove and dispose of the contaminated water.

Rabel says an investigation is ongoing to determine the specifics regarding the hazardous material.

"It was difficult to completely determine because there was a lot of rain going on at the time. So there is a hydrocarbon that was on the surface of the asphalt and mixed in with the water. It had spilled and made its way into a large portion of the driveways and parking lot in that immediate area," says Rabel.

No one was injured in the incident.
