If you need gas, now might be the time to fill up as it looks like some Airdrie gas stations are jumping nine cents in price.

Previously at $139.9, some stations are jumping to the $148.9 mark. According to Patrick De Haan, Head of Petroleum Analysis at Gas Buddy, there are a few reasons for the price shift.

"Refinery maintenance for plants in the states is ongoing while the outage of the largest refinery down in the US midwest and northwest Indiana has been contributing to less gasoline supply. In addition, we started the transition to more expensive blends of summer gasoline."

De Haan also stated we are starting to see a rising demand for gas as the weather is shifting towards spring.

"I do expect that we're going to see more stations making that jump. The provincial average has also made the jump already of around 4 cents to the $143.9 range."

At the beginning of April, we will see another rise in prices as the price of carbon emissions will rise by $15 per tonne starting on April 1, as part of the federal government's commitment to raise the price annually until 2030.

The current federal fuel charge is 14.3 cents per litre, which will be jumping to 17.6 cents because of the increase. The carbon tax jump will also increase diesel to 21 cents per litre.

This initiative imposes a fee on greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the cost of burning fossil fuels, to motivate Canadians to alter their behaviours.

De Haan finished off by saying he also expects gas prices to jump around a total of 20 cents before the May long weekend.
