Alberta Mounties are investigating the death of a 34-year-old man who died after an altertaction at a prison in Drumheller.

Drumheller RCMP received a call call of a medical emergency at the Drumheller Institution on Monday evening at approximately 5 p.m.

"[The] investigation revealed that there was an altercation, and one inmate, suffered serious injuries. He was transported to hospital where he was declared deceased," police said.

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes has taken carriage of the investigation.

According to a news release from Corrections Canada, the man was identified as Abdirahman Mahamed.

"At the time of death, the inmate had been serving a sentence of 3 years and 4 months since May 5, 2023, for possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm with ammunition."

Corrections Canada said that the man's next of kin have been notified.

"As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified."
