Southern Alberta needs to see some dry weather for the next couple of weeks.

Joe Michielsen, Soil Moisture Technologist says anything west of Highway 2 has excessive moisture.

"In the past 3 months they've received anywhere from 160-200 mm of precipitation. There is going to be a lot of ponding and parts of crops are going to be drowned, and there will probably be some yellowing as well," he explains. "It's too much of a good thing, they need some hot, dry weather in the next little while."

Michielsen says this is above normal precipitation for this time of year.

"It can change from being too wet to too dry very quickly here in the next little while," he says. "The crops are going to be using a lot of that water if we do get a dry spell, so later in the summer people may be saying the excessive conditions were a good thing, depending what the summer brings."

He adds there is an area southeast of Lethbridge that got baseball sized hail and entire crops were wiped out.

"The problem with the hail at this time, is that it's really too late to seed any of the crops, unless your going to be using the crop to feed livestock," Michielsen says.
