While Red Deer and Edmonton were host cities originally for the World Junior Hockey Championships when they started in December, only Edmonton will be the scene of the rescheduled championships this August.

The International Ice Hockey Federation announced on its website on Saturday that the 2022 world junior tournament will go in the Alberta capital from August 9th through 22nd at Rogers Place arena.

The original tourney, in Edmonton and Red Deer, was cancelled on December 29th because of COVID-19 after the cancellation of several games.  The results of games that were played in December won't count in the standings.

Jake Neighbours of Airdrie, who is playing for the Edmonton Oil Kings in the WHL, made the Team Canada lineup and was an alternate captain for the squad.   In just 26 games with the Oil Kings Neighbours has amassed 15 goals and 26 assists for 41 points and is a plus 21 on the season.  Neighbours has only played 26 games because he started the season in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues, the team that drafted him in the first round, 26th overall.  In his nine games with the Blues Neighbours had a goal and an assist.  He scored his first NHL goal on October 23rd against the Los Angeles Kings.

Team Canada will play in Group B with Finland, Czechia, Slovakia and Latvia. The defending champion Americans are in Group A with Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.  Russia won't play in the tournament because of their country's invasion of Ukraine.

The IIHF also announced that the 2022 U18 women’s world championship would be moved from Sweden to the United States in June. Details on dates and venues have yet to be released but the tourney was originally scheduled for January in Linkoping and Mjolby, Sweden, but wasn't played due to COVID-19.
