At approximately 7:30 this morning, Airdrie fire crews received a simultaneous report of a fire alarm in a four-storey apartment building in the Canals neighbourhood, as well as a call regarding a fire on the second floor of the building.

According to Airdrie Fire Chief Mike Pirie, when crews arrived on the scene, a fire was found on a balcony on the second floor, activating the sprinkler system which ultimately put out the fire.

"[There are] no injuries at this time and the fire was contained to the balcony. The building itself was evacuated, with carbon monoxide found on the second floor. At this point, the crews fire out and are just working on salvage in the building and should have everybody back shortly," Chief Pirie said.

Residents of the building have since been allowed back in. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
